The issue of match officials being attacked after a game is a reoccurring decimal in Nigeria Professional Football League. It was the same case in Akure on Sunday, Sunshine Stars fans allegedly attacked match officials following Sundays 0-0 home draw against Kano Pillars at the Akure Sport Complex
It was the first time Sunshine Stars failed to record a win at home in the league, the Owena Waves were frustrated by the visitors’ spirited performance to frustrate the host.
Referee Damian Akure and his assistants Emmanuel Apine and Lewis Gwantana were allegedly attacked after the full-time whistle by the home fans.
Sunshine Stars received a heavy sanction last season by LMC due to crowd violent and were ban from playing at the original home stadium but were forced to play at Dipo Stadium Ijebu..
A top official of Kano Pillars condemned the act stating that the action of the fans was barbaric, calls for severe punishment from the League Management company.
Chris Okunnuwa, The Media officer of Sunshine Stars publicly debunked the allegations, claiming an object thrown from the stands by a fan hit the affected official’s face. He denied the attack saying the fans didn’t attack the match officials. Chris added that investigation has begun to unearth the culprit and bring he/she to book if found guilty.
