Mr. Itoro was lying on the bed. He was in room 202 of a Tonelic luxury hotel.
His wife and children thought he was working till late. But he is a liar.
The truth is, he was in room 202 waiting for a prostitute. A friend of his told him he will hook him up with a prostitute who is so good in bed.
He is not the only man who does this, many do it. This is not the first time he has done this, he has been with eight different prostitutes, he likes to try new se*ual experiences. He was eager to experience the s*x of this new prostitute with good reviews.
“Room fire” a female voice said from outside Mr. Itoro’s hotel room after a knock.
Room fire. That was what he requested the prostitute to say so that he knows it’s her.
He got excited. He got up, removing the pair of socks his wife had bought him, he quickly walked to the door and opened it. A woman walked in wearing a long trench coat and high heels, she had a rough weave on her head.
The woman walked in straight. Cat-walking, passing him as she rubbed his balls.
“Get nak*d. We have an hour” she said as she went to the bathroom.
He closed the door with a cheeky smile asking, “Aren’t you going to undress me? I can pay extra”
She was in the toilet relieving herself. Short call. She was pressed.
“Do you want ten minutes wasted on me undressing you or a full hour of s*x?” She asked speaking from the bathroom as she wiped herself then flushed the toilet.
“I will undress quickly” he said as he rushed to the bedroom removing the shirt his wife bought him for his birthday.
“You’re ready?” She boldly asked as she got out of the bathroom nak*d.
He looked at her naked body. Wait a minute. He knows this woman.
She walked closer to him and he saw the tattoo on top of her navel with the initials IE.
“Ekere (Ekereobong)?” He called her name.
She paused and looked at him. She recognised him. Only one person used to call him like that, with that tone.
She turned back, walked to the bathroom to pick up her trench coat and put on her heels.
He rushed to stand at the door to prevent her from leaving.
Her trench coat was loosely on her. Her nak*d chest was still visible.
“Ekere, is it you?” He asked again.
“Get out of my way” she shouted.
“How have you been?” He asked her, trying to hold her arm.
She slapped him.
“How dare you” she barked at him.
“How dare you ask me that after what you did!?” She added.
He looked at her. She looked at him.
“How dare you! You lied to me, you abandoned me, you pig. You rejected your own daughter. How dare you make me pregnant and dump me!” she shouted.
She tried forcing her way out the door. He stopped her.
“Let me go. I swear I will kill you” she shouted.
“Don’t touch me. Don’t touch me” she screamed.
In the commotion, her wallet fell from her trench coat. She looked down at it.
He could see a photo of a smiling girl.
He reached down to pick up the wallet and looked at the photo.
“Is this my daughter?” Mr. Itoro asked.
Ekere broke down and cried. Her body couldn’t hold. She slid down the wall and sat on the floor crying.
“That’s my daughter. You have no right to call her yours. You abandoned her. You left us. I hate you” Ekere said crying as she kicked Mr. Itoro.
Mr. Itoro looked at the photo of his daughter some more. The daughter has his eyes and lips.
Sixteen years ago, Ekere and Itoro were a couple. The IE tattoo above Ekere’s navel was done when they were together; I for Itoro, E for Ekere. He cheated on Ekere many times as they dated, she kept forgiving him. When she got pregnant, Itoro left her and cut off communication. Two years later, Itoro impregnated another woman, the one who is now his wife. He married her, now together as a married couple, they have three children.
“Hiiiih hhhhhiiih hhiiihh water please” Ekere cried as she struggled to reach inside the side pocket of her trench coat.
“Water” she cried louder. Desperate. Gasping for air.
Mr. Itoro rushed inside the bathroom. Opened the tap. Filled a glass with water and handed it to Ekere.
She took the glass of water and drank it after swallowing some medicine tablets.
Mr. Itoro looked at her. She was not the same Ekere he used to fool around with, go out on dates with, romance with. Ekere has changed. Her body looks sexy and grown, but her face is tired.
“What happened? Why are you in prostitution? You used to be an A student. You were in University when I left you. You had big dreams” Mr. Itoro asked as she calmed down.
“You happened. You were the worst mistake I ever made. I was an innocent young lady in love. I trusted you. I gave you all of me. I loved you. I dreamed of a future with you” she started talking.
She drank some more water.
“When you made me pregnant and left me, my life fell apart. My parents disowned me, I couldn’t continue with my University studies. I was pregnant, hurt, alone and confused. I got into drugs to numb the pain, I thought of committing suicide many times. That daughter is a miracle child. She has survived though so much”
Ekere started crying again.
“Being a single mother has been tough. I was hopeless, lost and desperate. I started selling my body just so that I have money to feed my daughter and pay rent” she opened up.
He looked at her and couldn’t believe it.
“When dead beat dads abandon their children, they have no idea what the woman they made a mother is going through. This is not the kind of life I want. My daughter thinks that I work for Ibom Air since I work at night. I lie to her. She should never know I sleep with men to pay her school fees”
Ekere covered up her chest after she noticed her nak*d chest was showing.
She blew her nose and continued talking, “You broke me. You made me ugly, you treated me like I am worthless just like many men are doing to women. I have tried to forgive you but seeing you has brought back so much pain again”
Ekere held to her chest. Her face cringed.
“Ulcers. You gave me ulcers. Painful ulcers”
“Is that what the medicine you took was for?” Mr. Itoro asked.
Ekere looked at him and answered, “The medicine was for both ulcers and HIV. I am HIV positive. Tonight if we had sex, you could have caught the virus if you don’t have it already”
Mr. Itoro’s face froze.
Ekere continued, “Are you married? You have children?”
“I am married. Three children” he answered. Ashamed.
Ekere shook her head saying, “Look at you, you have not changed. You are still selfish. What do some of you men think? Here you are booking a hotel room for you and a prostitute when you have a wife and children. This is how you give women ulcers and depression. This is how you destroy a woman, by spitting on all she is and has with you. I dealt with the pain you caused me by wasting away, each woman copes differently but it is painful”
Ekere got up. She gathered up the strength to stand.
“Bravo. Each woman’s heart you break, you make it so hard for her to heal” Ekere said.
“What’s her name?” Mr. Itoro asked.
“My daughter” he said showing the photo in her wallet.
Ekere grabbed her wallet and said, “She is not your daughter. You have no right to know her name. You rejected her”
Ekere opened the door.
“At least let me give you some money. To help you raise the child” he requested as he stood up.
Ekere looked at him as she buckled the belt on her trench coat. She said, “Keep your prostitute money. Seeing you has reminded me of the me I was before you ruined me. I will go back to being that woman. I have given you too much power over my life, it’s time I take my power back. I am done being used by men and working with men to hurt their wives”
Ekere banged the door and walked away.
He looked at his reflection in the mirror and was ashamed of the man he had become.
That night, he became a changed man. His past had come to teach him a hard lesson. No more breaking hearts and being the man responsible for causing people pain.
Mr. Itoro called his wife on the phone to say “I am coming home. I need you in my life.”
Be the reason someone has to change.
