The Emergency Call Center set up by the Akwa Ibom State Government in rapid response to the COVID 19 pandemic has 4 call stations on a 24 hour operation running on three shifts, morning, afternoon and night.
From the calls received, the ones that have symptoms associated with the COVID 19 disease are referred to the case management team in the Situation Room, headed by the state epidemiologist, while cases not COVID 19 related are referred to the other General Hospitals in the State. The case investigation forms are filled online by persons of interest. At the Call Center is the Geographic Information System(GIS) operator who tracks the location of the callers so that getting across to any location in the event of an emergency, can never be difficult. The Call Center also has clinicians who advise the caller on the next step to be taken.
The State Epidemiologist and his team of doctors and the NCDC officials in the situation room, embark on the follow up on the cases of interest and if the cases qualify the NCDS definition of suspected cases, the person is isolated and samples taken and send for test.
The surveillance team in the Situation Room also gets reports from the respective hospitals in the state and from individuals who call the team directly on their personal lines. Once the reports are gotten. After due review and analyses, the ones that meet the case definitions are enlisted as suspected cases and investigations are conducted on them. It is from the investigations that the person are confirmed positive or negative.
There are four teams in the Emergency Call Center, but only three teams run the shift for the day, leaving a team on off duty each day.
The call center and situation room were set up immediately after the first set of confirmed cases to ensure controlled response to the novel pandemic disease in the state.
