United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has lauded the leadership of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for their collective efforts to reinstate constitutional order in the Niger Republic.
Blinken took to his verified Twitter account on Monday evening to announce his conversation with President Tinubu and underscore their shared commitment to restoring stability in the region.
The series of tweets from Secretary Blinken read, “Spoke to Nigerian President Tinubu to commend his leadership of the Economic Community of West African States and discussed shared efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger.”
This public endorsement highlights the active involvement of ECOWAS, under President Tinubu’s guidance, in addressing the unfolding political crisis in the neighboring Niger Republic.
The crisis ensued following a coup that resulted in the detention of President Bazoum and his family at the official presidential residence.

Concerns have been mounting on the international stage over the conditions of President Bazoum’s detention, raising alarms about his well-being and rights.
Zeine’s Expresses Confidence
Adding to the complexities, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, a civilian and the military-appointed prime minister, stated on Monday that Niger would stand firm against ECOWAS’s sanctions threat.
Zeine acknowledged the challenges posed by the sanctions but expressed confidence in overcoming them. He stated, “Even though they imposed this unfair challenge on us, we believe we can overcome it”
His comments reflect the determination of the Nigerian government to navigate the crisis while upholding its sovereignty.
In response to the unfolding situation, ECOWAS has initiated a range of measures to exert pressure on the Niger Republic.
The bloc has severed financial transactions, suspended electricity supplies, and closed borders with the landlocked country, thereby obstructing vital imports to one of the world’s most economically challenged nations.
These measures aim to convey the urgency of restoring democratic norms and constitutional governance in the region.
