In a closely contested election, Senator Godswill Akpabio has defeated his opponent Senator Abdulaziz Yari to become Senate President of the 10th Senate.
Senator Akpabio is a former governor of Akwa Ibom State while Sen. Yari is the former governor or Zamfara State.
During the election conducted in alphabetical order of States on Tuesday, 13 June at the Red Chambers, the nominations of the two candidates set the stage for the election.
Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, nominated Akpabio, with his nomination being seconded by Solomon Yayi, a senator from Ogun West Senatorial Constituency.
On the other hand, Ishiaku Abbo from Adamawa North Senatorial District nominated Yari.

Akpabio, a former Minister for Niger Delta Affairs and anointed candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured 63 votes, ultimately succeeding Ahmed Lawan, the immediate past Senate President.
Yari, the former Zamfara State governor, received 45 votes.
The result was officially announced by Sani Tambuwal, the clerk of the National Assembly, with a total of 107 senators casting their votes.
In addition to Akpabio’s victory, Barau Jibrin, the senator representing Kano North Senatorial District, emerged as the Deputy President of the 10th Senate.
Barau was elected unopposed during the 10th National Assembly election.
Both Akpabio and Barau enjoyed the support of President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
