The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Amb. Umar Ililya Damagum as the acting national chairman of the party following an order from the Benue State High Court.
The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party on Tuesday, March 28, 2023.
The NWC, in a statement signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, said the decision to appoint Amb. Damagum was made in accordance with Section 45 (2) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).
The appointment is effective from Tuesday, March 28, 2023.
The statement also called on all party members and stakeholders to remain calm and united at this critical time.
The PDP is one of the major political parties in Nigeria and has been a major player in the country’s political landscape.
Amb. Damagum, who is the Deputy National Chairman (North) of the PDP, will now lead the party in an acting capacity.
The appointment comes at a time when the PDP is gearing up for the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, where the party hopes to make significant gains.
The PDP has a strong support base in several states across the country and has been a major opposition party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in recent years.
With the appointment of Amb. Damagum as acting national chairman, the PDP hopes to continue its push for a more inclusive and progressive Nigeria.

PDP NWC Appoints Amb. Damagum as Acting National Chairman
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at an emergency meeting today, Tuesday, March 28, 2023 acknowledge the Order of the Benue State High Court, dated March 27, 2023 with regards to the Chairmanship position of our great Party.
After a careful consideration of the Court Order and in line with Section 45 (2) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017), the NWC resolved that the Deputy National Chairman (North) His Excellency, Amb. Umar Ililya Damagum assumes the National Chairmanship of our Party in acting capacity with effect from today, Tuesday, March 28, 2023.
The NWC charges all leaders, critical stakeholders, teeming members and supporters of our great Party to remain calm and united at this critical time.
