Enyimba Football Club’s thrilling journey ends in jubilation as the club wins the 2022/23 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title for the ninth time.
The People’s Elephant were comfirmed Champions of Nigeria after Super Eagle’s legend, Finidi George, led them to a 1-1 draw with Rivers United on Sunday, June 11, 2023.
The thrilling encounter at the iconic Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, showcased the determination of both teams, ultimately sealing Enyimba’s place as powerhouse of Nigeria’s football.
The highly anticipated clash began with Enyimba setting the tone early on.
In the 39th minute, Ekenne Awazie gave Enyimba the lead after a defensive lapse from Rivers United.
The first half concluded with Enyimba leading by a solitary goal.
The second half started brightly for the Rivers State team.
Their relentless efforts paid off in the 48th minute when Nyima Nwagua slotted the ball past Enyimba’s goalkeeper to make it 1-1.

Following the final result, Enyimba emerged as the outright winners of the NPFL Super Six playoffs table, securing a total of nine points from five games and also qualifying for the CAF Champions League.
Meanwhile, Remo Stars, who finished on the same points as Enyimba, had to settle for second place due to an inferior goal difference.
The accomplishment still represents a historic moment for the club, as they will make their debut appearance in the upcoming CAF Champions League.
Rivers United’s third-place finish in the Super Six playoffs guarantees them a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup.
