The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has held a meeting with the leadership of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Labour Congress to address the planned strike by the union.

The meeting, which was called on Monday, March 27, was aimed at resolving the challenges faced by Nigerians over the scarcity of naira notes, among other issues in the country.

The NLC was represented by 10 members of its delegation, including the President, Joe Ajaero, while the CBN Governor, Kingsley Obiora, and Ade Shonubi, attended with two of his deputies.

Ngige had earlier forwarded a letter from the Congress to the CBN Governor for immediate action as part of his efforts to address the issue.

However, the NLC accused the ministry of making no efforts to resolve the issue.

During the meeting, Emefiele acknowledged the receipt of the letter and informed the attendees that funds had been made available to commercial banks to address the scarcity.

He also stated that bank staff were directed to work on weekends to hasten the even spread of cash.

Ajaero, the NLC President, lamented that relevant stakeholders were not carried along in implementing the CBN policy, which left many Nigerians confused and agitated.

He called for better communication and urged for the Congress’ National Executive Committee to meet and decide on the planned strike.

The NLC had earlier sensitised workers across the country to prepare for a nationwide strike scheduled for Wednesday, March 22.
