Chelsea Football Club has made a stunning announcement that the club’s beloved former player and manager, Frank Lampard is returning to Stamford Bridge as caretaker manager until the end of the current season.
This decision comes after a disappointing seven-month spell at the helm of the club by Graham Potter, who was sacked on Sunday.
Following Potter’s departure, former Brighton defender Bruno Saltor was appointed as the interim head coach, but the club’s hierarchy has now deemed Frank Lampard as the best candidate to lead Chelsea to the finish line.
The announcement was made through a club statement released by co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, who expressed their delight at having the former England international back in the fold.
The statement reads, “We are delighted to welcome Frank back to Stamford Bridge. Frank is a Premier League Hall of Famer and a legend at this club.
“As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach, we want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season.
“We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line.
“We have an important game against Wolves on Saturday and then we will turn our attention to our Champions League quarter-final in Madrid next week.
“We are all going to give Frank our full backing as we aim to get the best possible outcome from all our remaining games.”
Shortly after Lampard’s announcement as caretaker coach, he express his excitement and how easy it was for him to accept the job.
He said, “I will do my best, then we will see what happens. So it won’t be my decision [long-term]. I understand I will be asked a lot, I’ve got my eyes open. I’m excited as there’s lot of talent here.
“It was easy to accept this job for me; this is my club”.
