The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended Benjamin Nnamani Daberechi, a 19-year-old student, as he attempted to smuggle Methamphetamine to Europe disguised within a sack of crayfish.
The arrest came to light through a statement shared on the agency’s official Facebook page by Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy.
Daberechi’s illicit intentions were foiled on Wednesday, 12th July, during a routine check of outgoing passengers on a Turkish Airlines flight, TK 0624.
Pretending to be a student traveling to Cyprus for his undergraduate studies, the young suspect came under scrutiny during an interview with NDLEA operatives.

A thorough search of his luggage revealed a shocking discovery – 7.2 kilograms of a whitish substance cunningly concealed inside a sack of crayfish.
Subsequent testing confirmed the substance to be Methamphetamine, a highly potent illegal drug, the NDLEA official stated.
Also, the NDLEA’s vigilance at the Tincan Port Command on Tuesday, 11th July led to the interception of a significant consignment of Colorado, a potent strain of cannabis.
The contraband, weighing 116.5 kilograms, was ingeniously hidden within bags tucked away amidst a heap of used vehicle parts within a container labeled FCIU 8459700.
The said container had originated from Toronto, Canada, and was carrying three units of used vehicles.
Having received prior intelligence, the NDLEA requested a thorough examination of the container upon its arrival at the TICT terminal of the port on 14th June.
Collaborating with other stakeholders, including the Nigeria Customs and DSS, they uncovered 233 parcels of the illicit substance concealed inside traveling bags ingeniously camouflaged under used vehicle spare parts.
The arrests and seizures are significant victories in the fight against drug trafficking, demonstrating the agency’s dedication to curbing the menace of narcotics and protecting the nation from the devastating consequences of drug abuse.
