Liverpool has announced the signing of Wataru Endo, a 30-year-old Japanese international, from VfB Stuttgart for a four-year deal worth £16.2 million.
The deal, subject to international clearance and a work permit application, marks the Reds’ third signing of the summer transfer window.
Endo’s consistent presence on the field has led to them being tipped to bring an extra dimension to Liverpool’s midfield lineup.
Having wrapped up personal terms and completed a thorough medical assessment, Endo is now poised to begin a new chapter in his career at Anfield.
Endo Excited to Join Liverpool
The player is elated to be joining Liverpool and fulfilling his long-standing dream of playing in the Premier League.
“I’m very happy right now and I’m so excited to join a big club in Liverpool,” remarked Endo in an exclusive interview with Liverpool.

“It feels amazing, and this is my dream. It’s always been a dream to play in the Premier League and with one of the biggest clubs in the world. It’s a dream come true for me.”
Endo’s History
His history includes successful stints with VfB Stuttgart, Sint-Truidense, Shonan Bellmare, and Urawa Red Diamonds, along with contributing to Japan’s national team.
At the international level, Endo has 50 caps and scoring two goals for Japan.
He was also a key figure during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, playing an instrumental role as Japan progressed to the last-16 stage.
Upon his arrival at Liverpool, Endo will proudly don the No.3 jersey, indicating his commitment to the club’s cause.
“It’s going to be the first time for me that I play at Anfield. I can’t wait to play at Anfield in front of Liverpool fans,” Endo stated.
“I play as a No.6 and I’m like a bit more of a defensive player. I think I can help this club defensively and I will have a good organization in the middle. I think that’s my job.”
Liverpool’s Failed Transfer
The acquisition of Endo comes on the heels of Liverpool missing to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.
Caicedo, aged 21, opted to join Chelsea in a British record-breaking transfer of £115 million.
Liverpool had a bid of £111 million accepted by Brighton, but the 21-year-old player subsequently communicated his intention to join Chelsea instead.
Furthermore, Chelsea successfully secured Lavia from Southampton despite Liverpool’s initial agreement worth £60 million.
