Nigerian track and field athlete, Favour Ofili, has made a stunning comeback after missing out on the 100m race due to a registration mishap by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and Nigerian Olympics Committee (NOC).
On Sunday, August 4, Ofili won Heat 6 in the Women’s 200m event at the Paris Olympic Games with a record time of 22.24s, defeating Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith and Gambian Gina Bass Bittaye.
Despite the earlier setback, Ofili’s determination and talent shone through as she outran a strong field to secure her spot in the semifinals.
Her finishing time placed her in overall second place, just behind USA’s Gabrielle Thomas.
Ofili’s victory comes after she expressed her disappointment on social media for missing out on the 100m race due to the AFN’s oversight.
The Nigerian Minister of Sport Development Mr John Enoh had assured an investigation will be conducted to address the issue.
Now, Ofili will face new Olympics winner, Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia, in the semifinals.
This is Ofili’s first Olympic Games, and she has already made a significant impact.
