President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to APC Senators-elect to respect the party’s zoning arrangements for National Assembly Leadership.
President Tinubu made the statement while meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) Senators-elect in Aso Rock ahead of the June 13th Senate inauguration.
He advised them to respect the zoning arrangements set forth by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
The APC had endorsed Senator Godswill Akpabio from the South-South region for the position of Senate President, with Senator Jibrin Barau from the North-West region as Deputy Senate President.
Despite some lawmakers’ opposition to the proposed zoning formula, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of party unity and urged the senators-elect to align with the party’s decisions.
President Tinubu, in support of his administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, emphasized the necessity for all APC Senators-elect to respect the party’s zoning arrangement while electing their Presiding Officers.

He highlighted that the challenges facing the nation require collaborative efforts between the executive and legislative branches, viewing them as a “pan-Nigerian project” that demands unified action.
The President urged the Senators-elect present at the meeting to convey his appeal to their colleagues who were unavoidably absent, encouraging them to prioritize party unity and national interest over personal ambitions.
He emphasized that the pursuit of solutions to the nation’s problems should involve both the executive and legislative arms of government.
During the meeting, Senator Akpabio extended congratulations to the President on the successful presidential inauguration.
He also informed President Tinubu that he and Senator Barau had already reached out to other APC Senators-elect and even those from opposition parties, garnering positive responses and pledges of support.
The primary focus of the rescheduled meeting was to ensure a harmonious relationship between the executive and legislative branches and to streamline the process of electing leaders for both chambers of the National Assembly.
President Tinubu’s appeal aimed to secure the support of APC Senators-elect in upholding the party’s zoning arrangements and fostering unity within the party.
