The Nigerian Senate has passed the National Anthem Bill 2024, which aims to bring back the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
This bill passed its first and second readings on Thursday and now awaits President Bola Tinubu’s assent to become law.
The legislation seeks to replace the current anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” with the original anthem composed at Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960.
The old anthem, written by British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams with music by Frances Berda, was a prominent symbol of Nigeria’s national identity until it was replaced in 1978 during Olusegun Obasanjo’s military administration.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele highlighted the anthem’s historical significance: “Upon rendition, it inspired deep patriotism among Nigerians.

Those who lived through that era recognize its crucial role in our nation’s history, evoking nostalgia and fond memories of our early years.”
The bill also proposes that the second stanza of the current anthem be adopted as the national prayer. Bamidele mentioned that further consultations might be necessary to finalize this aspect.
During a public hearing on the bill, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, emphasized the need for broader consultation.
He stated that while the reversal of the anthem is not out of place, it should reflect the wishes of all Nigerians through a more inclusive process.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria Mike Ozekhome supported the change, recalling his advocacy for it during the 2014 National Conference (CONFAB).
He noted that the old anthem’s line addressing oppression is particularly relevant and that the current green-white-green flag is less inspirational compared to those of other nations like the US and South Africa.
The House of Representatives has also passed the bill. For the change to take effect, the bill must be harmonized by both legislative chambers and signed into law by the President.
