The breakthrough came courtesy of Remo Freuler, who converted a cross from Ruben Vargas, making him the sixth different scorer for Switzerland in the tournament.
The Swiss continued to dominate, enjoying 65% possession and taking eight of the first nine shots on goal.
Just 27 seconds into the second half, Ruben Vargas doubled Switzerland’s lead with a stunning strike from the edge of the penalty area, curling the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma into the top corner.
Italy struggled to respond, their best effort coming from an own goal attempt by Fabian Schar, which hit the crossbar.
Exceptional Xhaka
Granit Xhaka, fresh off a successful season with Bayer Leverkusen, was instrumental in Switzerland’s victory.
His influence was seen as he completed more passes in the final third during the first half than the entire Italian team combined.
Xhaka’s control and distribution were key to maintaining Switzerland’s quick tempo and fluid play.
