A three-year legal battle came to an end today as the UK’s Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service cleared Dr. Olufunmilayo Ogunsanya, a Twitter doctor and social media influencer, of rape allegation.
The allegation was made against him by his former girlfriend, Dr. Bolanle Aseyan.
The judgment, announced on July 19, 2023, exonerated Dr. Olufunmilayo after a thorough investigation by the UK Police found the allegations to be unsubstantiated.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who represented Dr. Olufunmilayo in Nigeria, shared the news on his Twitter handle, accompanied by screenshots of the tribunal’s decision.
In October 2020, Dr. Bolanle Aseyan, based in the UK, took to Twitter through her handle @bola_aseyan, accusing Dr. Olufunmilayo of sexual abuse.
She claimed that he presented a different persona online and asserted that she had evidence of the alleged misconduct.
Denying the allegations, Dr. Olufunmilayo took the matter before the UK Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service to clear his name.
After a rigorous three-year trial, the tribunal found that the allegations lacked credibility and ruled in favor of Dr. Olufunmilayo, stating that his fitness to practice had not been impaired.
The tribunal’s decision was based on the balance of probability, rather than proof beyond reasonable doubt, highlighting the lack of merit in the accusations.
Following the verdict, Dr. Olufunmilayo expressed relief and gratitude for the support he received throughout the ordeal.
In his statement, Dr. Olufunmilayo’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, emphasized the significance of this outcome as a victory for all victims of false accusations of sexual misconduct.
He also revealed that Dr. Bolanle Aseyan now faces civil and criminal lawsuits in Nigeria for her actions.
Dr. Olufunmilayo, known for his medical insights and advocacy on social media, had taken a temporary break from Twitter during the legal proceedings.
With the cloud of suspicion lifted, he is expected to return to his platform and continue his impactful work in the medical community.
